Computer Classes :


Information Commons and the Health Sciences Library offer a wide variety of free Computer Classes for CUMC Faculty, Staff and Students. The list below has specific information on classes taught by Information Commons staff, to view the schedule of all classes and register please go to:

Information Commons is also happy to offer computer classes at your request - just contact us to work out a date and time that is best for your department or school if you don't see a time on the calendar that fits your schedule. We do require a minimum attendance of five people for these specially scheduled classes.

Information Commons Class List :

All classes require the basic computer skills of using a mouse and keyboard and opening and saving files.
All are one hour long except for Access I and Excel II and III, which are one and a half hours.
You must have a Columbia UNI to register and attend.
All classes take place at the Health Sciences Library 2nd floor Computer Classroom.

Classes offered by the Health Sciences Library include:
Ovid (Medline), PubMed, EndNotes, PowerPoint, Photoshop, and Poster Making

Class Details:

Access I:
Prerequisites: Familiarity with Microsoft Word and Excel.
An introduction to Microsoft's Access database program that covers:

  • How tables store data
  • Components of a table
  • Using the Table Wizard
  • Working with existing tables
  • Using relationships to link tables and data
  • Types of relationships
  • Using forms to process data
  • Creating queries to collect data

Computer Security:
Today's best practices for keeping your data and computer secure, including special services offered by CUMC. Topics covered include:

  • Physical Security
  • Password Safety
  • Understanding Today's Security Threats
  • Using AntiVirus and AntiSpyware Programs
  • Firewall Software Programs
  • Backing Up Your Data

Corporate Time I and II:
Corporate Time is the calendar program offered by CUbhis and used widely in CUMC departments.
The beginner's class (I) includes:

  • Setting up your preferred Calendar view
  • Scheduling entries in your Calendar
  • Inviting others to meetings
  • Managing another Calendar as a Designate
  • Using Shared Resources in your department such as Conference Rooms

The advanced class (II) includes:

  • Setting default Options in your Calendar
  • Viewing other Calendars
  • Setting Viewing Access Levels for your Calendar
  • Using Groups
  • Generating suggested Meeting Times for Groups
  • Attaching Files to an Event

Email Essentials:
A hands-on tutorial for your Columbia email account including:

Excel I:
This class covers the basic concepts of Excel 2000:

This class covers formulas, formats, charts, maps, printing and previews in Excel 2000:

Excel III:
Prerequisite: Excel I and II or intermediate experience and knowledge of the program.

Remedy Help Desk Ticketing Software:
Technical Support departments and staff at CU can use Remedy to track their work and route problems between other CU departments. Contact Information Commons if you need access to Remedy and would like to find out more - existing staff with Remedy accounts can come to our free monthly training session and find out how to:
