Software Downloads

Columbia University and the CU Medical Center have purchased a number of site licenses for software programs, allowing them to be used on student, faculty and staff computers for free. We've consolidated a list of available software with links to their download and installation instructions.

Please note that:

  • Most programs have versions for both Windows and Macintosh based computers, be sure to read any documentation provided regarding compatibility.
  • If you are prompted to login after selecting a link, use your UNI and password.
  • When your affiliation with the University and/or Medical Center ends, you must uninstall any programs that were downloaded under the site license.
  • Some staff and faculty may not have access to certain site licenses due to the fact that their department chose not to participate in the purchase of a site license.

Site Licensed Software:

  • Microsoft Office - licensed for CUMC students and some departments only.
Versions available are: 2000, XP (2002), and 2003 for Windows; 2004 for Macintosh
  • Symantec (Norton) AntiVirus
NOTE: You must uninstall any existing antivirus programs on your computer prior to installing the Columbia version.
  • VPN
This program is required to use the Rome wireless network at CUMC, or to securely connect to on campus systems from offsite. Please select the appropriate link for your computer that is listed under the West Campus heading on the VPN page.
  • PuTTY
A Telnet program pre-configured to allow PC users to connect to your CUNIX account (space on the Columbia servers).
  • WinSCP
A secure file transfer program for Windows computers.
  • Fugu
A secure file transfer program for Macintosh computers.
  • Aladdin Expander
A decompression program for ZIP, GZ and ARJ files.
  • Pine
A command line email program for PCs (however we recommend using a free email client such as Thunderbird).
  • Pest Patrol AntiSpyware
However, CUbhis recommends that Windows users install the free Windows AntiSpyware Beta.
