Connecting to the CUMC Network from Off Campus

There are a number of ways to connect to CUMC resources from off campus:

  • Dial Up Access - CUIT on the Morningside campus manages a modem pool allowing anyone with a valid UNI and password to connect to the Internet via dial up for free.
    • For configuration instructions please see the Dial Up links under the "Set Up Your Connection" heading to the right of their Network Access page.
    • The phone number for the modem pool is local, if you require an 800 number for work purposes please see the information here to apply.
  • High speed network access from off campus is not provided by CUMC. If you require it for work purposes you must arrange to use a private vendor and speak to your supervisor or Department Administrator regarding billing.
  • Access to online journals, books and other Library resources is available by starting from the HSL home page or E-Resources page and logging in with your active UNI and password when prompted.
    • Up-To-Date is not available off campus, our license only allows for on campus access.
    • Casual staff and Alumni may not be able to access Library E-Resources. Alumni can try the CU Library Alumni and Friends Portal for access to some resources.
  • If you need to connect to a network drive, computer or CUMC program from off campus, chances are you can install VPN on your off campus computer to connect.
    • The off campus computer must have a working Internet connection (dial up or high speed)
    • The computer must be configured to connect to the appropriate resource (e.g. mapped to the network drive, any needed programs installed - contact the group that manages the resource for this information)

Once the off campus computer has been configured and VPN installed, you can use the West Campus Remote Access connection in VPN to create a secure tunnel, allowing you to access the on campus resource.

Please be sure to verify in advance that VPN will allow you to connect. Since different IT groups often manage different resources, please check with your supervisor first or contact 5-Help for more information.
