Computer Labs and Classrooms

The primary locations are on the 1st and 2nd floors of the Health Sciences Library and the Presbyterian Hospital Student Computing Lab on the 17th floor. Both locations offer Dell Windows XP systems, with PowerMac G5 OSX systems available at the Library. High speed laser jet printing is also available at both areas and the Bard Hall lobby. The computers are:

  • Available on a first come, first served basis

  • All connected to nearby laser jet printers via the printing system
  • Updated with current antivirus and antispyware programs

All but the Library Resource systems (in the Lobby alcove area and Lower Levels) will allow you to burn CDs and use a personal USB key.

Wireless network access and data ports for laptop computers are available at the Library and PH17 so students can connect their personal computers to the CUMC network.
Note: you must register your computer for either or both wired and wireless access, and if necessary configure your computer for wireless at CUMC before you will be able to connect.

All computing areas require Columbia or NYP Hospital ID for access.

The Information Commons help desk is also located on the 2nd floor of the Library. Staff at the help desk can provide intial troubleshooting for computer problems, and answer questions regarding technical resources on campus. Students can purchase CDs, USB keys, printing pages, and other items here as well.

Noise Level and Food and Drink Policies:

We realize that there are a variety of environments in which people prefer to work at different times. To accommodate this, there are designated computing areas for different uses:

  • Food and Drink
The Computer Lounge on the 1st floor and the E-Lounge on the 2nd floor allow you to have food and drink while you are using the computers. All other areas do not allow food and drink at any time, including the PH17 Student Computing Lab and the Library. Anyone found with food and drink will be asked to move to an approved area immediately.
Please help us keep the computer equipment safe from spills and in operable use for everyone by respecting these restrictions!
  • Noise Levels and Cell Phone Use
The E-Lounge on the 2nd floor of the Library is designated as a group study area with talking allowed.
The Lower Level 1 study area and Lower Level 2 carrels in the Library are designated as a quiet zones, no talking is allowed.
All other computing areas are unrestricted, but we ask that you limit conversation and phone use to low levels and short conversations, with the understanding that others near you are working and may be distracted.
